Janet R. Steffens

Janet , daughter of Louis and Gertrude Bastian, was born in Brooklyn, NY and grew up on Long Island. She passed away after valiant battle with cancer in the comfort of her home and surrounded by her loving family.

Janet graduated from New York State Teacher’s College in New Paltz, NY and was a teacher on Long Island until relocating to Severna Park, MD where she lived for thirty years. The last nine years she has resided in Heritage Harbour, Annapolis MD and wintered in Punta Gorda, FL.

Janet is survived by her husband of 58 years, Frank Steffens, and four of their children: Anne (Peter) Squicciarini of Norfolk, VA, Susan (Joseph) Dunigan of Ellicott City, Francis “Skip” (Jan) Steffens of Crownsville, MD and Mary Jane (Nick) Nock of Atlanta GA. Their daughter, Katherine Steffens of Washington DC, predeceased her. She has five grandchildren: Lisa(Dan)Mazzio, Peter Squicciarini and Mary Kate Squicciarini also Ian and Bailey Nock. Her three great grandchildren are-: Ella Squicciarini, Charlotte and Caroline Mazzio.

Janet loved, and was loved by her family and friends. She enjoyed the beach, travel, gardening, sailing and playing bridge. She was active in the community and involved in CYO, the Girl Scouts, and Meals on Wheels.

Her welcoming personality and wonderful sense of humor will be missed tremendously. Her grace and poise in life will never be forgotten.

Family and friends may visit on Sunday, September 9, 2012 from 2-5 pm at Barranco & Sons, P.A. Severna Park Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Monday, September 10, 2012 at 10:00 am at St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church, 689 Ritchie Hwy, Severna Park, MD 21146. Interment will be private. In remembrance of Janet, in lieu of flowers, please make a donation to Hospice of the Chesapeake, 445 Defense Highway, Annapolis MD 21401 (410) 987-2002.
