Susan Allison Hackman

Susan Allison Hackman, 66, a resident of Millersville for 25 years, died Thursday, December 20, after a 6-year battle with colon cancer. Born Susan Elizabeth Allison to the late Ralph I. Allison and Mary Alice Labine Allison in Minneapolis, Minnesota on December 17, 1946, Sue married Geoffrey J. Hackman on March 15, 1969.

She is survived by Geoff, her husband of 43 years, of Millersville, daughter Amy of Minneapolis, MN, sons William, of Rockville, MD, and Geoffrey D. Hackman of New York, NY, and grandchildren Caitlin, Janet, Charlotte and William, all of Rockville. Also surviving are her brother Robert C. Allison and sisters Jeanne Allison and Katherine A. Niarhakos.

Sue earned a B.A. in psychology at Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware, OH, an M.A. in Education at Western Carolina University in Cullowhee, NC, and an Advanced Certificate in Special Education at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. She taught special education in the Champaign, IL, school system, at the American Embassy School in New Delhi, India, and in the Anne Arundel County Public Schools, retiring in 2009. Sue was devoted to her students and experienced great joy in their successes. She was honored as High Point Elementary School’s Teacher of the Year in 2007. In addition, Sue took pride in serving two terms on the board of the School of the Incarnation in Gambrills, MD. She applied her care and attention to detail in that service and provided insights gained from years of experience as an educator.

Over the past 6 years, Sue participated in several clinical trials and underwent a number of major surgeries and chemotherapy regimens. She showed an iron will in fighting cancer and defied the odds to survive well past expectations to extend her time with her children and grandchildren.

Sue was an avid reader and enjoyed participating in two book clubs. She also engaged in genealogical research into her family and was a supporting member of the Stearns and Benton Counties (MN) Historical Societies and conducted research at the Minnesota Historical Society in St. Paul, MN.

Family and friends may visit on Wednesday, January 2, 2013 from 2-4 pm and 6-8 pm at Barranco & Sons, P.A. Severna Park Funeral Home, 495 Ritchie Hwy, Severna Park. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Thursday, January 3, 2013 at 11:00 am at Our Lady of the Fields Roman Catholic Church, 1070 Cecil Avenue, South, Millersville, MD 21108.
